WEEKLY REFLECTION - WEEK THREE (CHAPTER THREE)
INSTRUCTIONAL TRAINING: WEEKLY REFLECTION – WEEK 3 (CHAPTER 3) TOPIC: UTILIZING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING INTRODUCTION: Success in the educational ministry of the church, the meeting of various needs of the students, as well as achieving educational objectives, largely depend on the teacher knowing the right resources and services available to him, and proper utilization of these resources to achieve the set goal. Teachers must be concerned about having ready access to rich and varied collections of instructional materials and equipment to enhance effective teaching services to students. This is so stated because they are in the right position to understand how these resources influence both the nature and quality of their students’ work. Therefore, the need for utilizing these resources for effective teaching should not be overstressed. WHAT ARE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS? These are a collection of teaching aids or resources capable of providing students with kinds of activities that are consistent with the course objectives. These include, among others, audiovisual aids, projectors, charts, maps, television, computers, phonographs, tape recorders, textbooks, films, video tapes, transparencies, and others needed for day-to-day studies or presentations. IMPORTANCE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: The instructional materials a teacher uses are crucial because these materials usually determine the activities in which the students engage. Instructional materials provide the students with practical experiences that are consistent with the lessons objectives. They are a means to an end. Without them practical experiences in the meeting of the lesson objectives will be absent. They stimulate improvement, and facilitate individualized learning and close person-to-person relationships between students and teachers and among students. The use of instructional materials constitutes an effective medium in accomplishing the desired educational objectives. RECOMMENDATION/CONCLUSION: Having understood the usefulness as well as advantages of using instructional materials in our educational system, it is advisable that the authorities concerned should rise up and do the following, among other recommendations: • Make provision for the acquisition of instructional materials duly selected to satisfy the course objectives. • Provide instructional materials centers such as libraries, workshops, studies, laboratories, and the like to encourage individualized and group participation. • Organize in-service training for educational media specialists and teachers to keep abreast with the trend of events and objectives requirements. • To make these materials available to students at affordable costs and encourage massive student participation with strict supervision and evaluation. • There may be others. It is therefore imperative in view of the above that concerned authorities should see the need to utilize instructional materials in the teaching ministry if effective result would be achieved.
